Continuous Ink Supply Canon Pixma Mx 492

Stop - Pixabay[German]Short information about a possible problem with Canon All-in-one printing devices. There are reports from users that Canon Pixma MX492 (and other Canon) printers suddenly cause issues when there is a Wi-Fi connection to a network with Internet access. Without a Wi-Fi connection (or Internet access), there are no issues. It seems that a DNS issue is the root cause of device restarts. And the question is whether anyone else is affected? Addendum: Canon provides a firmware update to fix that issue.

The Canon MX492 is a wireless all-in-one inkjet photo printer from the Pixma series, which can fax, print and scan. The devices can be connected to a network via Wi-Fi connection.

Issues with the Canon MX492

The request reached me via a closed group on Facebook, where someone pointed out the problem in a short message with reference to a discussion at reddit.com (thanks to Max S. for the tip).

On reddit.com, a concerned person who opened the this thread writes about the following difficulties with a Canon MX492 printer in connection with a network:

Canon MX492 Restarting Repeatedly after connecting to Wifi

It keeps turning on and off repeatedly every time I connect it to the wifi.

If I disconnect from the network, it works fine.

I've already reset my network and did a factory reset on the printer.

What could be the issue?

The device switches off and on again or remains in a kind of restart loop – as soon as the printer is connected to a network via Wi-Fi. Thus, the devices are virtually unusable. If the Wi-Fi connection to the network is disconnected, the printer works without problems. Remedies such as factory resetting the printer or resetting the network (presumably the Wi-Fi connection to the network) did not help, the affected person writes.

This could be an isolated issue, but the post has already received 65 comments and another user confirmed this issues with Canon PIXMA MX490 series printers (and possibly other models) getting stuck in a boot loop. The following reddit.com posts were referenced:

  • What is wrong with my Canon MX 492 Printer
  • Canon MX492 is doing this for hours on end without stop – Anyone know why and how to fix?

In the latter post, someone posted a video of the printer malfunctioning. Also in the Canon forum there is this thread about the issue.

Problem with Internet connection

Currently, it turns out that the problem is related to the Internet access of the Canon MX 492. In the meantime, there are two workarounds.

Workaround  for DNS problem

In this thread, someone writes that there must be a DNS problem and links to the workaround described here that might help.

I solved my problem by turning off the Access Point (or unplugging the internet cable from the router's WAN port). The printer will turn on normally.

Then go to Setup menu > Web service setup > DNS server setup > Manual setup.

Configure an IP from your internal network that is not in use or another IP that is not a DNS server, as the printer will not be able to make queries.

Once configured, press OK.

Select the 'No' option and press OK.

Wait a few moments to complete the configuration.

After returning to the menu, press the 'Home' button on the printer.

Turn the Access Point back on or reconnect the Internet cable and retest.

For me this solution worked. As I do not use external services (Google Cloud), there is no need for my printer to consult on the Internet.

The affected person disconnected the Wi-Fi connection to the router and then manually entered a DNS server (whose IP address – 192.168.X.X – an IP that is unoccupied in the network, see also here). It seems to help with affected users.

Just block Internet access for the device

And I got a feedback from German user to my blog post, who just blocked outgoing Internet connections for Pixma Canon MX492 within it's router firewall, to avoid this continuous reboot cycle. Might help also for other Canon printer models, if affected. Anyone with the same experience?

Addendum: In the meantime, a number of affected people have reported here and in the English blog. In addition, it appears that not only the Pixma Canon MX 492 All-In-One printer is affected. Also the Canon models Pixma 6550, MX490, MB2010, Maxify MB 5350 and MG7520 seem to show the effects. However, the list does not have to be complete. The cause is unknown – no idea if it's a firmware update that's now causing the problem. Unfortunately, there are also (vague) indications that interrupting the Internet connection does not help with all those affected – I cannot currently judge whether this is something for the worse, or whether it is due to inadequate communication from those affected, which paints a false picture.

Addendum 2: Canon provides a firmware update to fix that issue, see Canon PIXMA/MAXIFY printers (MX492 etc.): Manual firmware update fixes restart loop.
